Every home is prone to the occasional coffee spill or shoe stain. It’s inevitable. But it’s all about how you deal with the stain afterwards that matters. Here’s our expert-approved method, for how to clean carpets that have common dried-on stains, like red wine, gravy, mud, pet messes (ick), and more.

1. Take two empty spray bottles, and fill one with cold water. In the other, mix 1/4 teaspoon mild dishwashing liquid, like Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap($2, amazon.com), and 1 cup warm water.

2. Spray the detergent solution onto an absorbent cloth (not the carpet — you don’t want to wet it too much), and dab (don’t rub!) it on the spot. As the stain dissolves, blot with a clean section of cloth. Keep applying and blotting this way until the stain is gone.

3. Spray another cloth with the cold water, and use it to rinse the detergent solution from the carpet, then blot again with a dry cloth.

4. Pile a stack of paper towels on the spot, and place a heavy pot on top. “Overnight, the towels will soak up any residual stain deep in the carpet. In the morning, fluff the fibers with your fingers and allow to air-dry,” Forte says.

5. If the stain remains, try a more targeted approach based on the stain you’re dealing with.

How to Maintain Your Carpet

Refresh high-traffic areas

Spy a gray, matted trail from your couch to your kitchen? In between heavy-duty cleanings (with a rented machine or by a professional), hit the dingy path with a powdered or foam carpet cleaner, like Resolve High Traffic Carpet Foam ($4, amazon.com). Apply it according to the package directions, then vacuum.

Keep dirt outside

Try implementing a no-shoes-in-the-house rule. Stow extra slippers or flip-flops next to a shoe rack near your door, and encourage family members to make the switch inside. Stash a broom in a closet near the entryway to collect dirt before it gets ground into doormats, and put down mats outside your door, too, so you can wipe your feet before you go inside.

De-grit doormats

Interior doormats can only stop dirt from being tracked inside and onto your carpet if they’re clean. If the care tag allows, you can toss mats into the washer and dryer and use the gentle cycle on warm and tumble-dry low. Otherwise, use a vacuum. Go over the front of the mat, flip it over, and then vacuum the back, even if it’s rubber or plastic (this loosens any embedded dirt). Then flip the mat again, and vacuum up the grit that came out. For a quick refresh, take the mat outside for a good shaking, beating it with your hand or a stick a few times on each side.

Cleaning Hacks for the Woman With Zero Extra Time

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that there’s just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Work, kids, partners, pets, laundry, dinner — the list grows exponentially. Like gremlins. And one of the biggest time-suckers of all turns out to be cleaning, a task that can eat up hours upon hours each week. In the immortal words of Kimberly “Sweet Brown” Wilkins, “Ain’t nobody got time for that.”

Seriously, though, there has to be a better way, right? While cleaning is a necessary evil, we’ve got places to be and people to see — we need sprucing up to be as expedited as possible. Happily, there are hacks for busy women like you and me who have zero extra seconds in the day to devote to tedious cleaning.

So, if your motto is “Work smarter, not harder,” bookmark this page. As a busy mom of two, I have learned some pretty great hacks that will save you a whole lot of time. Here are some of my favorites.

1. Use a pillowcase to clean ceiling fans
The blades of your ceiling fan draw dust in like a moth to the flame. We’re all friends here, so there’s no shame in admitting you usually don’t get to this hard-to-reach area until you’ve got dust so thick it looks like fuzzy black caterpillars. When you go to clean it, the dust then inevitably falls all over the floor, meaning you now have to tack on time to vacuum or mop too. Make your life easier by stealing this trick from Homemaker Chic: Use a pillowcase to dust your ceiling fan blades so all the dust is contained.

2. Dust with a lint roller
While we’re on the subject of dusting, do you ever wonder where the dust goes with traditional dusters? Like, aren’t you basically just pushing the dust around from one place to another? Therein lies the genius of using a lint roller as a duster — the sticky stuff grabs dust so it doesn’t simply resettle when you aren’t looking. This hack works especially well on cloth lampshades.

3. Get rid of dog hair with a rubber glove
We all love our pups, but constantly trying to keep their shedding at bay is the bane of any dog owner’s existence (unless you have one of those bizarre but adorable hairless dogs). Brooms prove to be of little use in this battle because the hair just gets blown somewhere else in the process. If you’re tired of cleaning the same upholstered areas over and over to get rid of your dog’s hair, do this instead — use a rubber glove with a textured palm surface, like heavy-duty dishwashing gloves, to scrape the hair off of your couch or carpet. You can also use a glass squeegee if you happen to have one lying around.

4. Pour Pine-Sol in your toilet brush holder
The ol’ toilet brush — ick. It needs to stay on standby in the bathroom, but it can get so gross. But instead of tossing yours out every other day, pour Pine-Sol down into the toilet brush holder. Not only will it clean and sanitize your brush, but it will also make your bathroom smell fresh.

5. Power(tool) clean your tub & shower
You’ll never meet a person who enjoys cleaning the soap scum and mildew that naturally accumulates in the bathroom. Well, unless that person utilizes this hack. Basically, it entails modifying a scrub brush to fit onto a power-drill head. Then you can basically just buff grime right out of your bathroom with minimal effort. You can learn how to do it here.

6. Blow bathroom exhaust fans with canned air
File this under super-simple yet incredibly clever ideas you can’t believe you never thought of. If you go into your bathroom and look up, chances are you’re going to be staring straight into a bathroom exhaust fan that is so dirty, you almost can’t see the vents. But it’s in such an awkward spot… how do you clean it? Try grabbing canned air and blowing all the crud out. Then just use a broom to sweep up what came out and voilà! Clean bathroom vent.

7. Wipe down baseboards with dryer sheets
It doesn’t matter how clean the rest of your house is, dirty baseboards make it look a little grimy. However, they’re hard to clean. Who wants to spend half a Saturday on their hands and knees scrubbing this wood trim? Here’s a two-prong trick that could save you some serious time (and also your sanity): Wipe down baseboards with dryer sheets. This keeps dust from re-accumulating so you don’t have to worry about it as much. And if you’re really next-level lazy like me, you can even stick the dryer sheets to the pad of your Swiffer and go to town.

8. Blast your blender with soap & hot water
Blenders are notoriously difficult to get clean because they have so many little nooks and crevices. There’s nothing worse than thinking you got the job done only to have a bit of mildew pop up when you’re trying to make your favorite breakfast smoothie. Don’t worry. Just pour some hot water in the blender along with liquid soap. Press start, and the blender will churn up suds to clean all the places your hand couldn’t reach.

9. Pour wine on wine spills
Yes, you read that right. And, yes, I realize how counterintuitive it sounds. However, for reasons unbeknownst to us, white wine acts as a great stain remover for red wine. Weird, right? But if you spill a glass of red wine at your next party, crack open a white and pour it out on the spot too. Then use a paper towel to blot, blot, blot the red wine stain away. Bonus? You get to open a new bottle of wine.

10. Line your slow cookers
Ah, you’ve made a delicious one-pot meal and everything is great until you’re finished eating and it’s time to clean off the baked-on food at the bottom. The solution? Use a slow cooker liner that you can simply toss out after your meal. These are my favorite liners.

11. Line your fridge shelves with press-&-seal wrap
My least favorite thing to clean? The refrigerator. It takes a day and a half to clean the whole thing, and it’s a huge headache. But if you line each shelf in your fridge with press-and-seal wrap, all you have to do is pull it off and toss it in the trash when it’s dirty and put on a new one.

CAN’T TOUCH THIS: CREATE YOUR OWN CACTUS DECOR

There’s a perfectly prickly trend happening these days. While we’ve been gushing over succulents over the past few years, now the more sticky, prickly version is becoming very haute in everything from home decor to clothing. Those saguaro, prickly pear, Joshua tree and pincushion cacti are popping on on everything from neon lights to salt and pepper shakers to button-down blouses to watercolor paintings and much more.

If you’ve fallen in love with these bright green, pokey plants, there are dozens of DIY ideas you can do to incorporate them into your home and wardrobe. Here are three of my favorites that range from plush and cuddly to fun and functional. For even more cactus decorating ideas.

Bedroom

Believe if or not, a beautifully prickly cactus can make your bedroom even more warm and inviting, even snuggly! With beautiful watercolor images of flowering cacti, crocheted, stuffed cactus plants, clever cactus string art, an adorable poofy cactus stool for a children’s bedroom and mini cactus felt ornaments strung together in a fun swag, that bedroom can be your own desert oasis.

Want to adorn your bed in cactus-themed bedding? Create your own desert garden by making a batch of cactus throw pillows to pile on your bed. Cut out simple cactus shapes in either felt, flannel, fleece or your favorite cotton. Find fabric with a cactus pattern for even more whimsical fun. Stuff the pillows and for a little extra fun, thread yarn or thread through the fabric to create “spines.”

Kitchen

The bright greens and pinks of desert cactus plants in bloom prove a perfect theme for a sunny kitchen. Cacti are appearing in kitchens in the form of cookie jars, dishes, salt and pepper shakers, planters and much, much more. Tablescapes and centerpieces are even more prickly perfect when adorned with vases filled with a variety of cactus and succulent plants.

If your thumb is less than green, but you still want a pot filled with cactus plants, you can create your own garden of cacti out of painted rocks. Find a collection of smooth rocks in various sizes and round shapes. Paint in a variety of green shades, add spines in white paint and let dry. Fill a terra cotta pot or planter of your choice with small gravel and then arrange the cactus rocks to best resemble that desert landscape.

Wardrobe

The saguaro cactus can be found on all sorts of T-shirts paired with a variety of snarky, fun sayings like “Can’t touch this.” You can also find cacti on Bermuda shorts, kimonos, skirts and even sneakers. This new Southwest trend is easy to come by in stores, but you can also make your own on-trend clothes, too.

Dress up a plain T-shirt by adding a pocket of cactus-printed fabric. Applique a flowering cactus to your baby’s onesie for an adorable look. Or you can grab some fabric paint and make your own Southwest pattern by creating your own cactus design. Take a new pair of white tennis shoes, too, and paint on a desert landscape for the perfect pair of kicks.

Truly, it’s the season when we celebrate and respect the honorable production of creator Robert Propst, who initially made the idea of the desk area in 1967 as a component of his “Activity Office II” idea for acclaimed furniture producer Herman Miller. In 1976, Dick Haworth licensed and presented the primary work area divider boards with interior wiring, introducing the multiplication of desk areas we know today.

The first aim of the desk area was to build profitability by empowering representatives to work in private and with restricted diversions. While this may have worked, it was seemingly at the irreversible cost of decreased visual perception, carpal passage and social uncouthness.

Moreover, since its presentation in the 1970s, the desk area has experienced no huge change or advancement and has in reality transformed incalculable workplaces worldwide into labyrinths of boring and dead squares, without daylight and any social association.

On a positive note, desk areas gave us Dilbert and Office Space.

So how would we observe National Cubicle Day when desk areas are viewed as the ringer bottoms of the furniture business? We look past the developing accord that desk areas are murdering us and rather commend the way we and our work environments have advanced.

Scott Lesizza, establishing main of Workwell Partners, a supplier of working environment outfitting arrangements situated in New York City, is extremely comfortable with the advancement of the desk area and our workspaces. Following 20 years in the workplace outfitting business, he seen the quick change from desk areas to the hip, in vogue and in vogue work environments related with quickly developing organizations and hot new businesses.

A large number of the most dynamic organizations are keep running on a culture of cooperation. Work spaces, obviously, will kill joint effort at its center, so all things being equal hope to open zones and make cooperating spaces for individuals to meet, blend and collaborate.A hot pattern nowadays is supplanting work spaces with long keeps running of seats that have under-work area link administration plate rather than charged boards. Likewise prevalent are “convenience territories” that incorporate bistros and cheap seats outfitted with power, wifi and rooftop decks for congregating and working amid times of great weather.Provide a setting that permits and urges representatives to remain dynamic. Customizable stature and standing work areas enable representatives to sit and stand all the more serenely, while supplanting the common office seat with an activity ball can advance better stance. A few workplaces have moved to treadmill work areas and even a hamster wheel.
